WHAT IS A HOST?
---------------
When you are a host, it means that your Mac is available for other Macs, called guests, to visit.
WHAT IS A GUEST?
-----------------
When you are a guest, it means that you are visiting another Macintosh set up as a host. As a guest, you have as much control of the host computer’s resources as the host allows in the Security Preferences dialog box.
HOST AND GUEST
---------------
When a guest visits a host, the host screen is displayed in a window on the guest Macintosh called the “guest window.” The guest’s mouse and keyboard are used to control the host. A user can view activity on the host or control applications and peripherals from the guest computer as if sitting in front of the host machine.
MULTIPLE GUESTS
----------------
Multiple guests can simultaneously view the same host, but only one guest at a time can control that host. Control changes automatically, for example, when one guest finishes typing and another guest begins typing.
FILE TRANSFER
--------------
ScreenLink can transfer multiple files or folders from Mac to Mac in the foreground or in the background while you are working in another application.
FROM ANY APPLICATION
---------------------
Since ScreenLink is opened as a desk accessory, it can be used from within any application.
INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY
----------------------
ScreenLink increases productivity and expands the application base and number of files available to any one guest Mac. With it, you allow the Mac designated as the host to share computer resources, such as applications and mounted hard disks, with one or more guests.
WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH SCREENLINK?
-----------------------------------
Some uses for ScreenLink include:
• Work away from your office - Any Macintosh using normal phone lines and a modem can use ScreenLink for remote support; to access remote applications and peripherals; collaborate on projects; and to upload and download files.
• Local Support Provider - Any Macintosh on a network can use ScreenLink for network support; to check project status; and to upload and download files. A network administrator can move files from one workstation to another quickly and easily.
• File Transfer - ScreenLink allows users to transfer files to and from another Macintosh while users on both machines continue to work on applications or perform other functions, including remote control.
• GhostScreen™ - Your department server can operate without a monitor, video card, keyboard, or mouse, being set up and maintained from a remote location.
• Technical Support - You can support your staff and others. You can observe activity and fix problems as if sitting at the remote machine.
• Work collaboration - People at different locations can work on the same project at the same time.
• Macintosh Classroom - Training of groups and individuals all in one room or in remote locations is possible with ScreenLink. An instructor can perform a sequence of functions and have all those visiting see the steps as they occur.
SYSTEM 7.0/7.1 COMPATIBILITY
-------------------------
This version of ScreenLink is compatible with System 7.0 & 7.1.
HOW CAN YOU CONNECT?
----------------------
Connections can be made via:
• Any AppleTalk network topology including TokenTalk®, LocalTalk™, and EtherTalk®
• Normal phone lines using Modems
• Extended AppleTalk networks
• Direct connections
OPERATING AS A HOST
--------------------
To make your Mac a host, choose ScreenLink from the Apple® menu. Check the box marked ‘Be a Host.’
You have the option of being a host or a guest, but not both at the same time. To stop being a host, uncheck the box marked ‘Be a Host.’ However, if you attempt to visit a host while you are a host yourself, ScreenLink automatically makes you a guest. Once you are through being a guest, you will become a host once again.
GUEST CONTROL
--------------
Any number of guests can view a host at one time. However, only one of the guests in attendance may control the host Macintosh at one time. As soon as the host is idle, either from local activity on the host or remote activity from another guest, you can take control of the host.
HOST CONTROL
-------------
The host has priority over any guest and can regain control of the host Macintosh at any time by clicking the mouse or typing a character.
HOST DISCONNECTION
-------------------
Click on the ‘Be a Host’ check box to uncheck it. All guest connections are now terminated.
CONNECTION
-----------
A host cannot initiate a visit or file transfer session. The guest must do this. However, a host can establish a serial connection to another Macintosh and be visited by a guest.
VIEW PREFERENCES
-----------------
Set a host’s View Preferences by selecting ‘View Preferences’ from the ScreenLink menu.
• Host will Recognize:
_Changes made by QuickDraw_
Host will detect QuickDraw changes before they are drawn to the screen.
(Usually ON)
_Direct writing to the screen_
Host will detect screen-bit changes on screen made by programs that bypass QuickDraw.
(Usually OFF)
_For faster screen changes_
Allocate more memory as a function of screen size to speed screen drawing.
(Usually ON)
• Host will Compress:
_Screen updates before sending_
Faster for serial connections; Compress any screen changes before sending.
(ON for Serial, OFF for AppleTalk)
• Host will Send Screen Updates:
_Immediately_
Before the host can perform another operation, the guest must receive the previously sent screen. This ultimately gives the guest better control of the host.
_In the background_
This option allows the host to refresh its own screen at a faster rate yet slows down what the guest will see.
SECURITY PREFERENCES
---------------------
Set Security Preferences by selecting ‘Security Preferences’ from the ScreenLink menu.
_View_
Enable observation for the selected guest.
_Control_
Enable control for the selected guest.
_Get Files_
Enable file transfers from a host for the selected guest.
_Send Files_
Enable file transfers to a host for the selected guest.
_Protect System Folder_
Prevent access to host System Folder through file transfer for the selected guest.
_Need Approval_
Host approval necessary; interactive security access for the selected guest to visit or file transfer.
_Enable CallBack_
Enable CallBack security feature for the selected guest.
_Host at Startup_
Set the default to become a host when the machine restarts (or turns on).
_Show Startup Icon_
Show the ScreenLink icon during startup (“the icon march”).
To create a new user, click the ‘New…’ button, then enter the following information:
• User Name - The name of the user.
• Password Security - The password the user will be using (case sensitive).
• CallBack Number - This security feature (serial only) returns a call to a predetermined number.
To enable or disable an individual user, double click on the user’s name in the user list. When the small checkmark is showing, the user is enabled.
OPERATING AS A GUEST
---------------------
When you are a guest, it means that you are visiting another Macintosh set up as a host.
HOW TO BE A GUEST
------------------
The guest visits a host by selecting a name from the Available Hosts list in the ScreenLink dialog box and clicking on the Visit button. Once this selection is complete the guest can control the Macintosh to whatever extent the host has indicated in the Security Preferences dialog box. See the previous section “Security Preferences,” for more on host security.
APPLETALK ZONES
----------------
If your AppleTalk network is divided into multiple zones, they are displayed in the AppleTalk Zones list. To enable one or more zones, click on the zone name, then click on the ‘Use…’ button. Repeat this process for each zone you want to make active. The host names from each selected zone are displayed in the Available Hosts list, and a zone icon is displayed to the left of each currently enabled zone name. You can also double-click the zone names and/or select multiple zones by shift-clicking or click-dragging in the list.
TAKING CONTROL AS A GUEST
--------------------------
While the guest cursor is within the guest window and the window is currently active (in front of all other windows), the guest can take control of the host during periods of inactivity by clicking the mouse or pressing a key.
If the window is not currently active, you can still view host activity while you work on your own applications.
GUEST WINDOW
--------------
The host screen is displayed in a window on the guest Macintosh. This window responds in the same manner as any window on your Mac. You are able to resize, zoom to full screen, and move the window. You can view and control the host machine as if it were your own within the security limits set up by the host. Additionally, you can switch between this window and other windows by clicking on the window you want to make currently active.
ENABLE FULL SCREEN MODE
------------------------
To go into Full Screen Mode, hold the Option key, and click on the zoom box located in the upper right corner of the guest window. When you complete this step, the menu bar of the host machine will replace your menu bar. To disable Full Screen mode, click again on the zoom box (which is now in the menubar). You can only zoom to the full screen if the host’s monitor is the same size or larger than the guest’s.
AUTO-SCROLLING
----------------
ScreenLink uses auto-scrolling in the guest window in full screen mode and normal mode. This feature is helpful if you are visiting a Macintosh with a larger screen than your own. Merely move your cursor left, right, up, or down when the guest window is currently active, and you have control to use auto-scrolling.
CURSOR CONTROL
---------------
If the guest cursor is black and the host cursor is grey...
The host or another guest is in control, or you don’t have control privileges.
If the guest cursor is black and the host cursor is black...
The host or another guest is in control, idle, and control is available. Click the mouse or press a key to take control.
If the guest cursor is black and the host cursor is invisible...
The guest is in control.
GUEST DISCONNECTION
--------------------
Select the host name in the ScreenLink window, then click on the Leave button. Or, disconnect by clicking in the close box on the guest window.
FILE TRANSFER
--------------
To start the File Transfer process, select any host from the Available Hosts list to enable the ‘File Xfer’ button. Click on the ‘File Xfer’ button.
Once connected, the contents of the guest startup disk and the host startup disk are displayed in list boxes in the File Transfer Browser window.
CHOOSE HOST AND GUEST VOLUMES
------------------------------
The drives and directories on either the guest or host Macintosh may be changed by clicking on the Drive button and/or using conventional Macintosh methods to move through the host and guest hierarchies.
SELECT A FILE OR FOLDER TO TRANSFER
-----------------------------------
Select the file or folder you want to send to or get from the host by clicking on it. Select the destination first and the file/folder that is being transferred last. Only one item from one of the list boxes may be selected at a time.
SEND OR GET THE FILE/FOLDER
---------------------------
To initiate the transfer of the file or folder you have selected, click on the Send/Get button.
QUEUE ANOTHER FILE OR FOLDER FOR TRANSFER
------------------------------------------
Once the previously selected file/folder is underway (ScreenLink displays the File Transfer Status window at this point), you can select an additional file/folder for transfer. You can repeat this procedure as many times as required.
FILE TRANSFER STATUS
---------------------
The percentage of the file currently being sent is displayed in the File Transfer Status window. The Status window allows you to monitor the transfer progress of a file or each file within a folder. If there is an error in the transfer, this information is displayed in an extension to the File Transfer Status window.
CANCEL
-------
To cancel the entire file transfer, click on the ‘Cancel’ button in the File Transfer window.
CANCEL A FILE ALREADY BEING SENT
---------------------------------
You can cancel the transfer of the current file and any pending files by pressing the ‘Cancel’ button on the File Transfer Status window or by pressing the Command-period key combination at any time.
MODEM CONNECTIONS
-------------------
When connecting via a modem, the available host name will not be listed until the phone connection is established and a “Connect xxxx” message is displayed in the Terminal area of the Port Setup dialog box. Once connected, click on the ‘OK’ button and select the host name displayed in the Available Hosts list, and click on the ‘Visit’ or ‘File Xfer…’ button.
MODEM CONSIDERATIONS
----------------------
Your modems must support at least 2400 baud (although 9600 bps or faster is highly recommended). ScreenLink 2.0.5 automatically initializes the modem to auto answer when Serial is selected from the ‘Connection’ pop-up menu if the ‘Be a Host’ checkbox is also checked.
HOW DO I CONNECT?
------------------
Select the Modem Port (generally, this is where your modem is connected), then click on the ‘Use…’ button. Enter the phone number of the machine you intend to call, and select an appropriate modem set up from the ‘Modem Setup’ pop-up menu. For example, if your modem is Hayes compatible, select the setup entitled ‘Hayes Compatible.’
You can now press the ‘Dial’ button, and ScreenLink will automatically dial the selected number and negotiate the modem connection.
When you receive the connect message, click the ‘OK’ button.
You can now select the host’s name from the Available Hosts list and choose to visit or conduct a file transfer.
IMPORTANT!!!
------------
Once your connection is established and you exit the Port Setup screen, re-entry to this screen causes termination of any visit or file transfer session with the host; however, your phone connection remains intact.
When connected through a modem, the connection can remain idle indefinitely as long as the ScreenLink window is still open. However, if all ScreenLink windows are closed on the guest side, the serial connection is dropped immediately.
MODEM SETUP
------------
You can save or delete a complete set of connect settings for a modem setup by selecting one of the following from the ‘Modem Setup’ pop-up menu:
• New Setup...
Specify a name for a new Modem Setup and create it.
• Delete Setup
Remove a previously saved Modem Setup. This permanently deletes the currently selected setup.
• Save Setup as...
Rename an existing Modem Setup prior to modification, so the original setup is preserved.
Modem Setups are saved in a file called “SL Modem Setups” in your Preferences folder. You should generally use the defaults supplied with the modem setup you have selected. The following are descriptions of some connect options:
_Xon\Xoff Handshaking_
Set software Flow Control on or off. (Normally ON).
_Hardware Handshaking_
Set Hardware Flow Control on or off (usually OFF). A special cable is required to use this option.
_Error Correction_
Set Error Correction on or off. Usually ON unless error correction is provided by your modem.
_Auto Answering_
To make your modem auto answer, click on the Auto button on the lower left side of the Modem Setup dialog box. Click on the OK button.
_Manual Answering_
To manually answer a call, click on the Answer button when the phone rings.
COLOR SUPPORT
---------------
ScreenLink can be used on color or monochrome Macintosh computers. The host Macintosh is presented in black and white in the guest window. In some cases where the host machine is in color and using lighter shades, parts of the image sent to the guest resolve to white. Darker shades resolve to black. This problem can be solved by having the host set to 1 bit black and white.
ENCRYPTION
-----------
All of the View Preferences, Security Preferences, and Modem Setups are encrypted for your protection. The purpose of this protection is to prohibit anyone with a resource editor (a program that reads data in a file) or a network “sniffer” (a device that reads network traffic) to read your passwords or to modify any of the saved settings.
SPECIFICATIONS
---------------
ScreenLink can be used on all Macintosh computers from the Macintosh Plus™ to the most currently released computers.
Use System 6.0.5 or a later system. ScreenLink on a server requires AppleShare® 2.0 or greater.
At least 2 megabytes of RAM is recommended.
At least High Speed 9600 baud modems are recommended.
ScreenLink is compatible with System 7.0/7.1. For use on a floppy system a 1.44 FDHD disk is required.
